Sabah, also known as The Land Below The Wind because it lies below the typhoon belt, is located on the northeast of the Borneo, Sabah is the second largest state in Malaysia. It has the South China Sea on the west and the Sulu and Celebes Seas on the east. Blessed with an awesome mountain (Mt Kinabalu, the highest in South East Asia),
excitingly fresh and unspoilt beaches, isolated tropical islands, fascinating culture, colourful and beautiful marine life, Sabah is one of the favourite spot for a get-away trip.
The capital city, Kota Kinabalu, is located at the west coast of the state. Kota Kinabalu which means, city of Kinabalu, got the name from the highest mountain in South East Asia, Mt. Kinabalu. This majestic mountain is located in Kinabalu Park which is Malaysia's first World Heritage designated by UNESCO in December 2000 for its 'outstanding universal values' and role as one of the world's most important biological sites. It is also one of the most climber-friendly mountain, with plank-step and handle ready throughout most of the journey to the summit.
Besides mountain, Sabah also has one of the best diving spot in the world, Sipadan Island. Strategically positioned in the centre of the richest marine habitat in the world, Sipadan rises in form of a slim rocky needle 600m from the seabed to provide spectacular wall dives and underwater garden.
The other main attraction is the Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary, it is a place where young orphaned or captive orang utans are taught survival skills so that they may return to their natural habitat and is open to public. |
